eCommerce SEO for Stores With Real Catalogues

Small stores have an SEO problem. Large stores have an index-bloat, faceted-navigation and duplicate-content problem, which is a different job.

  • Faceted navigation handled deliberately
  • Category pages that earn the ranking
  • Product schema that validates

The catalogue problem

Most store SEO fails at the filters

Every combination of colour, size and price band can generate a crawlable URL. Left alone, a five-hundred-product store presents hundreds of thousands of near-duplicate pages and the crawler spends its budget on none of the ones you want.

  • A faceted URL strategy: index, canonicalise or block, decided per facet
  • Category pages with content that answers the query, not filler under the grid
  • Product structured data with price, availability and review markup
  • Out-of-stock and discontinued product handling that does not shed authority

Talk to an Expert
Should filtered pages be indexed?

Some of them. A filter people actually search for — a colour, a brand — can earn a page. Price bands and sort orders should not be indexable. The decision is per facet, not global.

What happens to discontinued products?

It depends whether the page has earned anything. Redirect to the closest replacement if it has, keep it with clear messaging if there is search demand, remove it if it has neither.
